Behind the Scenes – Our Bridal Cover Photo Shoot

Crisp and clear. Not a cloud in the sky. The high expected to be 78. A weather forecast capable of bringing joy to any bride-to-be. This morning was extra special, though. Mother Nature not only has to satisfy the wants and dreams of two blushing brides, she also has a 12-person production crew depending on her kindness to provide a glorious backdrop for the day's work ahead.

Curtain call was at 8 a.m. On this Tuesday, Jan. 28, Fort Lauderdale's magnificent Lago Mar Resort & Club is playing host to Gold Coast Magazine’s most anticipated photo shoot of the year – our March Bridal covers. Upon arrival at the resort, we’re ushered to an ocean-front suite for makeup and wardrobe. Hotel staff, under the direction of General Manager Jim Pancallo and Events Manager Patricia Paul could not have been more accommodating – down to every detail. Meanwhile, Suzanne Delawar and her photography crew are unpacking trunks of lights, screens and cameras. All of this for one cover shot you may ask? Yes, but not for just one cover, it's for three. Gold Coast, Fort Lauderdale, and Boca Life. All three publications are going bridal in March. Two brides and two grooms. Multiple wardrobe changes. Multiple sets.

About 10:30 a.m. we’re ready for the balcony shot. Lena R. emerges from wardrobe wearing a Swarovski-studded gown courtesy of Zola Keller on Las Olas. Lee D., her debonair groom, sports a hand crafted Italian masterpiece from Moda Mario also located on trendy Las Olas Boulevard. His and her diamonds and jewels accent the couple with one-of-a-kind treasures from the gem on Las Olas – Carroll’s Jewelers. Balcony shots were for warm ups and the results were amazing. No cover yet. On to the next set.

Around noon, we started shooting in-and-around the pristine grounds of the resort. A visit by resort owner, Walter Banks, made these sets even more enjoyable. The tiki hut, living chess board, and beach hammocks provide the perfect settings for the playful fun shots, a look wanted for Fort Lauderdale, our tourism publication. Success! The living chess board made the cut. Fort Lauderdale has its March cover. Next, we set up our models in a beautiful courtyard rich in tropical greenery. Hmmm, perfect for the Boca look? You bet. Winner number two. Boca now has its March cover.

With two down and one to go we felt confident we could take a break and enjoy it. Our afternoon models arrive and are in makeup. It’s time for a quick lunch break. We are also joined by Gulfstream Media Group CFO Elton Sayward, Ave Keller from Zola Keller and John Moorman from Carroll’s Jewelers.

It’s now approaching 4 p.m., Cassandra M. and Rafael L., our afternoon bride and groom, are out of wardrobe and ready for action. Donning treasures from Zola, Moda, Carroll’s, and Panache, we proceed to the resort’s gift shop and quaint luncheonette, the front fountain and the main hotel lobby. Cassandra and Rafael moved from set to set making our job easier and easier. Each shot seemed to get better and better. We finalized on a close-up romantic shot in the front of the resort for our March Gold Coast cover.

Twelve hours of shooting, countless hours of location scouting, wardrobe shopping (the fun part), and model selections culminated after 8 p.m. with the winning shots – 2,000 images to pick from. Design, art direction and imaging take up the following two days.

I hope you’re happy with our new March covers and will enjoy viewing them as much as we did producing them!
