Melissa Zachariasz: The Business Side of Healthcare
If there is one woman who can master the “juggling act” of balancing business and family with ease and charisma, she is Melissa Zachariasz. As the President of MedPro Billing, she runs a full service billing and collections company specializing in Mental Health and Substance Abuse. Melissa started her company in 1992 out of her home in Broward County billing for local doctors. Her business grew from a few small clients to over 100 nationwide and now employs a staff of 150 with annual billings estimated at over $600 million. She services providers, treatment centers and specialists treating patients who suffer from mental health disorders, substance abuse and trauma.
What makes Melissa unique is her well-rounded ability to service a multitude of practices and her successful methodology for insurance billing. She has built an exclusive reputation with managed care companies and government organizations. Melissa is actively engaged in working with congress to enforce the Parity Act, which requires mental health benefits to be equal to those of major medical and surgical benefits with no dollar limits.
As a patient advocate, Zachariasz works to help educate government officials and the leaders of the nation’s largest Mental Health and Substance Abuse organizations on the trends in benefits, insurance reimbursement, and clinical management. “I have made it my life’s work to help patients obtain the treatment they need and to make sure doctors are paid what they deserve,” says Melissa.
Mental Health and Substance Abuse was often considered taboo, but now it has become highly discussed throughout the country. Most recently, we saw first-hand the devastating effects of this disease with the passing of great talents like Robin Williams and Philip Seymour Hoffman. One in four adults− approximately 61.5 million Americans suffer from mental illness in a given year. One in seventeen people, about 13.6 million, live with a serious mental illness like schizophrenia, major depression or bipolar disorder. Sadly, many people with these disorders turn to drugs and become dependent on them. Melissa adds, “We are a small piece of the pie when it comes to healthcare, but that’s changing now. It starts with education and industry leaders coming together to ensure the best treatment practices and equal reimbursement for providers who work tirelessly for their patients.”
“Melissa has a strong sense of self and she knows what she is doing. Her confidence and genuine demeanor exude through the phone when she is on a call with a client. I know she really cares about her work and it’s my job to convey that,” comments Allison Seriani, MedPro’s Marketing Representative. Over the years, Melissa and her team have made strides in bringing addiction disorders to the forefront of the healthcare industry. In February 2015, MedPro is partnering with C4 Recovery Solutions at the AXIS Summit.
Four hundred industry executives will come together to learn about new health care reform laws pertaining to addiction services and effective methods of communication with facilities and insurance companies.
