Massive Fort Lauderdale Water Park May Be Coming Soon—If Everything Goes According To Plan

Fort Lauderdale may be getting that gigantic water park sooner rather than later.
The city and water park resort company Schlitterbahn are “on the verge” of signing a lease that would give the company the green light to build on a 64-acre site near Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport, the Sun Sentinel reports.
The city recently got the OK to purchase the land from the airport after the Federal Aviation Administration said it wouldn’t need it for future expansion. The city is expected to make its first payment on the property by Aug. 1, according to the outlet.
Then it’s just a matter of putting the plans into motion for the Schlitterbahn water park—whose owner told the Sun Sentinel it will be “the biggest and baddest park we've ever built."
That's as long as nothing else gets in the way, however.
Plans for a water park in Fort Lauderdale have been on the books for years now.
The city has been in talks about such an attraction since at least 2009, according to CBS Miami. Amid negotiations with the FAA in 2013, Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jack Seiler told the outlet he expected construction on the $110 million Schlitterbahn project to start the following year.
But, as we all now know, that didn’t happen.
Rapids Water Park, located about an hour away in Riviera Beach, is currently the closest comparable attraction. The Schlitterbahn water park, which also has locations in Texas and Kansas, is expected to be more than double the size.
Even if everything goes according to plan, it’ll be some time before residents can wade through the lazy river or shoot down one of the massive water slides: The attraction isn’t estimated to open until spring 2018.
Still, the step forward would be welcome news for those who have been following the back-and-forth throughout the years.
As the Broward-Palm Beach New Times put it: “It’s about damn time, Broward! We've been trying to get our Schlitterbahn on forever! It's hot, dammit!”
