3 Fort Lauderdale Coffee Shops Will Transform Into Luke’s Diner From 'Gilmore Girls'
Fort Lauderdale is about to get a little taste of Stars Hollow.
On Wednesday, Oct. 5, three local coffee shops will transform into pop-up versions of Luke’s Diner, serving up enough caffeine to make “Gilmore Girls” Lorelai and Rori proud.
The pop-ups, of course, are meant to promote the Netflix revival of the hit TV series set to premiere Nov. 25—just in time to nurse that Thanksgiving food coma.
From 7 a.m. to noon on Oct. 5, Brew Urban Cafe, Sip Java Co., and The Flower Bar will give out free coffee to the first 250 patrons to walk through the doors.
The establishments—which are among nearly 250 participating cafes nationwide—will feature Luke’s-branded coffee mugs and sleeves, as well as staff donned in Luke’s hats and aprons. In addition to free java, customers should expect plenty of photo opportunities and a few select cups with codes for a month’s subscription to Netflix.
Taylor Fuentes, manager of The Flower Bar, said it was an honor to be among the cafes tapped to be part of the promotion. The shop is working to prep for a fun-filled morning expected to generate buzz for both “Gilmore Girls” and the Las Olas-based business.
“We have more people who are definitely going to be working to be a part of it,” she said. “We want to make it a big event.”
Bob Calabro, owner of Sip Java Co. on North Federal Highway, said he couldn’t pass up the chance to transform his business into the fictional coffee shop from the show many of his employees love.
“I have 11 women working for me, and there are quite a few that are fans of ‘Gilmore Girls,’” he said, adding that he’s always enjoyed the witty banter between the show’s main characters. “It seemed like a great opportunity.”
Besides, he said, he sees a lot of similarities between Luke’s Diner and Sip Java Co.—particularly, the sense of community they offer, whether it’s by being a gathering spot for lectures and fundraisers or a place where customers can go for reliable, friendly service.
So, should we expect to encounter a grumpy, yet lovable version of Luke himself?
“I do have a plaid shirt and baseball cap, so yeah,” Calabro said, laughing. “And I wont shave that day.”
Eighteen coffee shops in Florida are participating in the "Gilmore Girls" promotion, including two in West Palm Beach and three in Miami. Here are the addresses of the Fort Lauderdale locations:
