6 Instagram Photos That Prove Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse Is A South Florida Treasure

The Hillsboro Inlet Lighthouse was first illuminated in March 1907, but the story of this radiant lighthouse—which stands on the coast between Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale—begins well before that.

Congressional talks of building a lighthouse at Hillsboro Beach date back to 1890. Vessels needed the light to be guided through the Florida straits to the Gulf of Mexico or Cuba.

"Its erection will complete the chain of lights which extend from Jupiter Inlet to Tortugas, so that the navigator can make one light before losing sight of another,” the 1890 bill read.

It wasn't until 1906 that the Hillsboro Lighthouse was constructed in Detroit and shipped to its destination on a 4,000 nautical-mile journey. Standing at 137 feet, it has now towered over Hillsboro Inlet for more than 100 years.

Clearly, the Hillsboro Lighthouse can be appreciated for more than its history and height. On National Lighthouse Day—Friday, Aug. 7—these photos will show you that it's a thing of beauty, too.
