ARC Broward’s Delish Is No Ordinary Food Event—It Pairs Culinary Students With Top Local Chefs For A Memorable, Charitable Evening
This May, ARC Broward will be hosting a food tasting event that also serves up an eye-opening experience.
The local nonprofit works to provide opportunities for individuals with disabilities and other challenges, and at Delish, ARC Broward's annual fundraiser featuring top South Florida chefs, its culinary students are as much the star.
ARC Broward’s Culinary Institute offers individuals with disabilities a 16-week entry-level culinary training program with job placement as the end goal. The sixth annual Delish event will pair these students with local chefs to prepare tastings throughout the evening, with the ultimate goal of breaking the stigma against those working with disabilities and eliminating any preconceived notions guests might have.
“It's impossible for you to leave Delish without knowing who you were supporting and why you were there,” said Jessica Rodriguez, director of development for ARC Broward.
Delish 2017 is set to take place May 4 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Gallery of Amazing Things in Dania Beach. This year’s participating restaurants include 3030 Ocean, Valentino Cucina Italiana, Canyon Southwest Cafe, Hardy Park Bistro, Artisan Beach House and more.
Chefs from all of these South Florida eateries will be paired with one or two ARC Broward culinary students, who get to walk away with resume-building and confidence-boosting experience—and perhaps even new mentors or future employers.
“The beautiful thing about Delish is it’s another opportunity for our students to get in front of someone that is hiring,” Rodriguez said.
For instance, two of ARC Broward’s culinary students recently had the opportunity to work in 3030 Ocean’s kitchen alongside chef Adrienne Grenier for a private event. By the end of the night, they ended up plating for the whole restaurant and begging to work with Grenier again at Delish, Rodriguez said.
“For them to continue knowing that chef Adrienne cares about them and believes in them, that will change their lives more than anything,” she said.
Aside from looking forward to the dessert lounge and Canyon’s prickly pear margaritas, Rodriguez said that her favorite moment each year is when ARC Broward Culinary Institute announces its Student of the Year.
“They get awarded with their own personal chef coat that night,” she said. “The emotion that fills the room from their families watching them … it's the most exciting part to me.”
General admission tickets are available online at arcbroward.com for $150, and VIP tickets—which grant guests early admission starting at 6:15 p.m (that means more time to enjoy the endless samples)—are being sold for $200.
