Art Basel 2016's Top Food Events For Everyone Heading To Miami This Week
Miami Art Week is about to take over South Florida, and with it, comes lots more than art. There's an equally endless amount of music, fashion and celebrity sightings in store, and let's not forget the food.
Just in time for Art Basel 2016, food and bar pop-ups, culinary celebrations, and cultural experiments will abound through Dec. 4.
Here are our picks for the top food events you should check out while you wander about:
The Wynwood Yard, Miami's culinary incubator and outdoor events venue, is hosting a six-day program of workshops, classes, demos and more to highlight the best of Miami's culture throughout Art Basel. Check out The Yard's Culinary Day on Wednesday, Nov. 30, featuring a garden tour, kids cooking class, garden-to-glass mixology workshop, and more. Artist Lauren Koplowitz will also have her culinary art installation "Better Half" on display all day. The Art Basel festivities will continue at Wynwood Yard throughout the week, with other themed days including Health and Wellness (Thursday), Arts in Miami presented by Airbnb (Friday), Music (Saturday), and Community presented by ZICO Coconut Water (Sunday).

The newly launched tasting series will be holding a special Art Basel edition, in which guests can purchase $25 tickets to sample bites and drinks from all of The Wynwood Yard's food concepts, including the venue's first full-service restaurant, Charcoal Garden Bar + Grill. Choices include chicken donburi from Kuenko, ribs from BBQ by Darian, grilled sausage from Charcoal, mac and cheese from World Famous House of Mac, fish and chips from The British Garden, vegan bowls from Della Test Kitchen, bubble tea from Mr. Bing, cold brew from Steelcity Coffee, and kombucha popsicles from Radiate Apothecary. The series will continue every Friday, including this Friday, Dec. 2, during Art Basel.

Kick off Art Basel with the second anniversary celebration of Miami's Arts + Entertainment District. Enjoy tropical treats from Acme Lounge and Miami Smokers amid the sounds of Miami musicians, such as indie band Magic City Hippies and headliner Sofi Tukker. There will also be art projects, handmade cocktails, local craft beer, cold brew by Vice City Bean, and fruity popsicles from Paleta 305. RSVP on Eventbrite.

Inspired by the street markets of Southeast Asia, Faena Hotel's Pao restaurant will be transforming its outdoor terrace into an illuminated night market featuring Asian street cart eats from executive chef Paul Qui and other world-renowned chefs including Edward Lee of 610 Magnolia, Christopher Haatuft of Lysverket in Norway and more. Bites will be paired with Bombay Sapphire cocktails.

Luxury vodka Absolut Elyx is hosting an interactive pop-up called "A Little Bird Told Me" at The Miami Beach EDITION's lobby bar. Award-winning European bartenders will host this creative cocktail event in which guests experience a 45-minute cocktail tasting menu that challenges and expands their perception of fine cocktails. The artisanal donut shop that has taken Miami by storm is about to go from yearlong pop-up to full-blown retail store. Ever since it first debuted as a pop-up during Art Basel last year, The Salty Donut has been serving up gourmet doughnuts—from Maple Bacon to Guava and Cheese—to lines of hungry followers every weekend. Now, it's finally ready to open up shop in its permanent location at Wynwood Arcade, where it'll be serving its fresh, handcrafted treats daily. Grand opening weekend will take place during Art Basel, with Friday, Dec. 2, acting as a VIP soft opening for Salty Donut fans who got an advance invite. On Saturday and Sunday, the shop will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (or until donuts are sold out), and the first 100 customers each morning will receive a free traditional glazed donut.

This Basel satellite fair, located in a tent across from the Miami Beach Convention Center where Art Basel itself is held, will host a prototype of a new food retail space from gourmet market brand Dean & DeLuca that celebrates food as a lively cultural and social experience. Designed in collaboration with German architect Ole Scheeren, STAGE will offer up salads, sandwiches and other eats from a theatrical platform that encourages social interaction between customers and the "cast" of staff preparing the food. Dean & DeLuca plans to introduce this new food retail format in select North American cities in 2017.

Popping up in the heart of Wynwood, Smashed Canvas is an outdoor public house featuring craft beer, cocktails and food, plus plenty of art and music. Latin fusion gastropub ITO Mojitos Y Cafecito will serve up local cuisine, while Basel goers kick back and relax as more than 20 of the world's best street artists paint the entire block between NW Second and Third avenues and 28th and 29th streets with murals.

The HIVE pop-up lounge will let guests escape the hustle and bustle of Basel and learn all about craft cocktails. The venue will host daily mixology presentations as part of its Behind the Bar Series, as well as a mixology competition to close out Art Basel featuring the men behind some of Miami's top bar programs, including Beaker & Gray, Finka Table & Tap, and SoCal Cantina. The nightly festivities will also feature lives DJs, an infinity skating plaza, and gourmet food truck garden. RSVP here for a free drink.
