Boca-based tennis player earns a name for herself
South Florida is home to a tennis star. Introducing 19-year-old Madison Keys of Boca Raton, who recently beat Venus Williams at the Australian Open.
Keys overcame a left thigh injury to beat Venus, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, and advanced to the semifinals against 18-time major winner Serena Williams last Thursday. There, she was defeated 7-6, (5), 6-2, but far closer than many expected for her first Grand Slam semifinal.
If Keys had won, she would have been the eighth player to have ever beaten both Williams sisters in the same tournament. But Keys isn’t a sore loser. She and Serena have expressed their mutual admiration for each other, with Serena even complimenting her celebrated opponent for her powerful serves.
Keys' ranking will improve from No. 35 into the top 20 as a result of reaching the semifinal, according to Fox Sports. Serena remained at the top of the WTA world rankings after winning the Australian Open against Maria Sharapova on Saturday.
