Boca Raton named 11th best city in America

According to online site 24/7 Wall Street, Boca Raton comes in as America’s 11th best city to live in.

The study reviewed data from 550 cities with populations of 65,000 or more as measured by the U.S. Census Bureau.  The best of the best was then determined based on seven major categories: crime, economy, education, housing, environment, leisure and infrastructure.

Boca Raton, with a median household income of $68,000 and an unemployment rate of 5.6 percent, came just shy of the top 10 ranking. With more than 86,000 residents, the average home values around $350,000 in this coastal city.

Data as specific as leisure activities, temperature, school’s test scores and number of bachelor degrees were also taken into account. Golf courses were deemed abundant with three within the city and more than 80 within Palm Beach County. Close the coastline, there are more than 30 marinas for boating and water sports as well as extensive shopping malls for those off the water. Average travel times estimate around 21 minutes with the help of easier commutes provided by the Palm Tran transit system.

One concern for the city is the high crime rate. According to the study, Boca Raton had a higher rate of property crimes than the national average in 2012. However, there were only 190 violent crimes per 100,000 residents, lower than the national rate.

Boca’s numbers stayed consistent throughout all seven categories except for infrastructure. For not a lot of infrastructure, Boca Raton is still considered an expensive area, much more than most of the cities reviewed.

Close to Boca’s ranking was another South Florida city; the city of Weston came in at No. 15 on the list.
