The first of five Wawa convenience stores coming to Broward County broke ground on Wednesday in Pompano Beach. It will be located at the intersection of Federal Highway and Sample Road and should be open for business by spring 2017.
Wawa is a Pennsylvania-based chain of convenience stories and gas stations that has amassed a loyal following. Beloved for its coffee, made-to-order hoagies and other fresh eats and drinks, the company first announced its South Florida expansion plans in the fall.
“We are thrilled to officially break ground on our first South Florida store and look forward to growing and bringing the Wawa experience to this market,” Wawa President and CEO Chris Gheysens said in a release.
Though no official completion dates have been set, Wawa aims to celebrate all five of the stores’ grand openings in spring 2017. The chain plans to open a total of 50 locations in Southeast Florida in the next five years.
