Fort Lauderdale Airport Invites You to Run on the New Runway
Six months after being postponed, the American Cancer Society’s inaugural “5K on the Runway” will take place Feb. 28 at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport’s new south runway.
Officials say the event will be the first of its kind and was originally designed to get the public involved in celebrating the completion of the new $791 million elevated runway, which opened in September.
Participants will have the unique experience to run alongside commercial airliners arriving and departing from Terminals 3 and 4.
The run is open to 3,500 participants and is still accepting participants.
In order to make the south runway available for runners, Greg Meyer, a spokesman for the Broward County Aviation Department explained that flights would arrive and depart from the parallel north runway for the length of the event. The run starts at 7 a.m. and will use about 7,000 feet of the 8,000-foot south runway.
