JetBlue's Soar With Reading Program Could Be Bringing Thousands Of Free Children's Books To Fort Lauderdale Kids
Broward kids could gain access to thousands of free children's books from JetBlue next summer, if Fort Lauderdale wins the airline's Soar With Reading contest.
The winning city will be selected through an online vote taking place now until Aug. 31. The initiative aims to help local children build their own libraries at home.
One of four cities up for the prize, Fort Lauderdale is currently leading the #BookBattle, with more than 55 percent of the vote. Competing cities are New York, Boston and Long Beach, California.
The books would be delivered in the form of several vending machines that dispense children's books for free. They would be installed in identified "book deserts," or neighborhoods where children and their families don't have access to age-appropriate books for purchase. The vending machine locations will be determined once the city wins.
Last year's winner, Detroit, had five custom book vending machines installed throughout the city this summer, which will help JetBlue distribute 100,000 free books in total.
Vending machines will be delivered to the winner of this year's #BookBattle in summer 2017.
