Lobster Bar Sea Grille’s Sommelier Throwdown Will Put Two Masters To The Test During This 6-Course, 12-Wine Dinner

Which wine expert is the best? Lobster Bar Sea Grille is putting two master sommeliers to the test.

At the first annual Master Sommelier Throwdown on Aug. 26, each somm will hand-select a wine to complement each of the six courses prepared by executive chef Jeff Pfeiffer. (Yes, that means the dinner includes 12 glasses of wine.) It’s up to guests to choose their favorite pairing for each course.

Dinner guests will determine the winner by scoring each wine on how well it complements the food as it is presented with each course. They will not know who selected which wine.

There are only 229 certified members of the Court of Master Sommeliers in the world, and the two competing in the event—Andrew McNamara and John Blazon—are both from South Florida.

McNamara, who is the director of fine wine at Premier Beverage, was awarded the Krug Cup after passing the Master Sommelier Exam on his first attempt and earning the highest score.

Blazon worked as the wine director for Walt Disney World Resort for nine years and is now the vice president of sales at Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates.

Chef Pfeiffer and the sommeliers worked together to create the evening’s menu. The masters’ pairings will feature wines from all over the world.

“Knowing the character of the somms, I would expect the wines to be exciting, unique and most of all, able to showcase the food,” Lobster Bar representative Sara Shake said.

The six-course menu is as follows:

Seafood Reception Starter
Oysters on ice
Steamed mussels

Swordfish belly lardo
