Nevis: The Undiscovered Caribbean Island Only A Short Flight Away From Miami

by Aubrie Gerber Jul 03, 2017 05:09 PM

When deciding on a Caribbean vacation, Floridians tend to hop over to well-known tourist destinations like The Bahamas, Jamaica or the Dominican Republic, which are bustling with all-inclusive resorts and tourist traps. But for those looking to escape to a place that’s rich in culture, native personalities and authentic island cuisine, Nevis is your island.

The 36-square mile West Indies volcanic paradise is the sister isle to St. Kitts. Equally luxurious as it is rustic, visitors will find only one chain accommodation, the Four Seasons Resort, among a handful of old sugar mill plantations transformed into beautiful inns.

Getting There

Part of the charm of Nevis is getting there. Miami offers direct flights daily to Saint Kitts via American Airlines. After clearing customs, guests hop on a quick 7-minute water taxi to the island. There’s a sense of accomplishment and exclusivity once you arrive. After docking, take a quick cab to your lodging while soaking up the 360-degree views. Pro tip: If you’re looking to ramp up the luxury experience, opt to transfer to the YU Lounge terminal after landing in Saint Kitts. The lobby provides guests with a VIP experience as attendants pick guests up from the tarmac in a Porsche Cayenne, whisks them away to the private terminal, clears their customs and provides a light lunch.

Where to Stay

There’s a variety of eclectic properties that appeal to a variety of lodging preferences—from villas situated on Nevis’ luscious volcano, to 18th-century sugar mill plantations transformed into luxury inns.

Four Seasons Resort Nevis: The largest, most luxurious accommodation on the island includes a sprawling beach overlooking the Caribbean Sea, a variety of hotel rooms and villas, three pools, a golf course, tennis courts and a complimentary private water taxi with transportation between Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Nisbet Plantation Beach Club: Situated next to the Atlantic Ocean, the plantation sprawls over 30 acres with 36 Nevisian-inspired cottages.

Montpelier Plantation Inn: Seeking romance? Head to this Relais & Châteaux property located 750 feet above the Caribbean Sea. The 18th-century sugar plantation includes 19 rooms with modern decor, a pool overlooking Nevis Peak and complimentary transportation to its private beach.

Golden Rock Plantation Inn:  Although this property doesn’t have air conditioning, guests are far from roughing it. Situated on the slopes of Nevis Peak, this intimate inn is home to only 11 guest rooms. Fall asleep to the cool mountain breeze, scout for monkeys and hummingbirds throughout its gardens and relax by the Victorian-inspired fresh water pool overlooking the Caribbean below.

Experiences

You won’t find tourist traps or gift shops on Nevis, but rather authentic experiences from locals who take pride in sharing their island.  Whether you’re looking to relax along its Caribbean and Atlantic beaches, explore the volcanic rainforest or learn about Alexander Hamilton’s (yes, that Hamilton from the Broadway hit “Hamilton”) birthplace, Nevis has it all.

Funky Monkey Tour: Hop on a 4x4 and explore Nevis’ hidden gems. During the 3.5 hour tour, guides lead guests on an on-and-off-road expedition exposing the island’s hidden beaches, sugar mill ruins and historical inns.

Nevisian Heritage Village: Learn about the Nevisian way of life and the island’s first settlers during a walking tour throughout the breathtaking property.

Alexander Hamilton Museum: While perusing downtown Charlestown, stop by the Alexander Hamilton Museum to discover where this United States Founding Father was born.

Land and Sea Activities: Feeling adventurous? Set sail on a snorkeling or scuba diving voyage, or embark on one of the island's many hiking trails along Nevis Peak.

Where to Eat

When you’re not hopping from inn to inn indulging in unique Nevisian culinary offerings at each property, opt to head off-site to independent eateries.

Sunshine's: Nevis is known for its tropical rum punch. Ask any Nevisian where to grab one and they’ll likely point you to Sunshine's for its Killer Bee drink. Relax in an outdoor cabana at this beachfront bar and casual restaurant where the local fish is as refreshing as the cocktails.

Coconut Grove Restaurant and Wine Lounge: French cuisine meets Caribbean fare at this fine dining outdoor bistro located in a large thatch villa overlooking the Caribbean Sea.
