New York's Famed Halal Guys Coming To Davie, Pembroke Pines With First South Florida Restaurants

This post has been updated to reflect that Halal Guys Davie is celebrating its grand opening on Jan. 21.

The Manhattan-based halal food cart known for attracting lines that stretch around the block is opening its first South Florida location in Davie.

Beloved for its gyro and chicken pita wraps and platters, The Halal Guys originally opened as a hot dog cart on West 53rd Street and 6th Avenue 25 years ago but quickly adapted to fill the demand for halal food (meaning the meats are prepared according to Muslim dietary laws) for New York City's cab drivers.

Now, in addition to the two original cars and restaurants in New York, The Halal Guys are expanding worldwide with 450 new franchise locations.

The new Davie restaurant is set to open Jan. 21 at 11 a.m. in the rapidly growing Tower Shops plaza. During the grand opening, customers will have chances to win T-shirts, free fries and platters, discount cards and other Halal Guys swag, and can also expect DJ entertainment.

Davie resident Shahmeer Alam, the local franchisee, has been a fan of The Halal Guys since he first discovered the cart on a trip to the city.

“Six years ago, I was in New York with my family, and I kept seeing these long lines at The Halal Guys cart at 53rd and 6th," he said in a statement. "After a few days, I had to find out what was going on. One of the owners, Ahmed Elsaka was there, and insisted we try the combo platter. I was hooked.”

When The Halal Guys opened up international franchising opportunities, Alam jumped on the opportunity to become the South Florida "Halal Guy." He has plans to open many more local restaurants, and in fact, the next location in Pembroke Pines is already in the works.

At the eatery, guests can order sandwiches ($6.99) or platters ($8.99) of beef gyro meat, marinated chicken, vegetarian falafel, or the famous chicken and gyro combo, with toppings like The Halal Guys' famous creamy white sauce (ask for extra!), fiery red hot sauce that'll make you cry (you've been warned), onions, olives, jalapeños and green peppers. Additional options include hummus, baba ghanouj, falafel, fries and baklava for dessert.

The Halal Guys at Tower Shops will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily. RSVP to the grand opening here.
