Greg Meyer, a representative with the Broward County Aviation Department, said he first learned Prince Harry would be arriving at the airport late last week but had to keep the news under wraps.
Even when travelers near the gate began asking questions, he said he simply replied: “I’m just here to meet a friend.”
The prince flew in from Toronto on a WestJet commercial flight that landed at 2:16 p.m. He was escorted by security detail and made his way to a car.
“He was gone before you knew it,” Meyer added.
The prince’s arrival was certainly a highlight for both airport officials and those who just happened to be at the right place at the right time.
“Oh, it’s the prince! It’s Prince Harry! It’s Prince Harry!’” Meyer said, describing the public’s reaction. “People were kind of excited.”
The Sentebale Royal Salute Polo Cup is an invitation-only event being held at Valiente Polo Farm in Wellington. The match will raise money for Prince Harry’s Sentebale charity, which helps children living with HIV in southern Africa.
South Florida is only Prince Harry’s first stop in the Sunshine State. After the polo match, he’s scheduled to head north to Orlando for the Invictus Games, an international sporting competition for wounded veterans and active military service members.
