Red Bull Global Rallycross Opens Season in Fort Lauderdale, Will Close Off Parts of A1A
You’ll see cars speeding, sliding and slamming into each other this weekend at the Red Bull Global Rallycross season opener in front of the Bahia Mar Resort & Marina in Fort Lauderdale.
The two-day event kicks off Saturday, May 30, and the Sun Sentinel reports that portions of A1A will be closed down beginning 1 a.m. Friday and ending at 3 p.m. Monday.
Racing fans looking to satisfy their need for speed should know that Global Rallycross differs from traditional racing in a few ways.
While traditional NASCAR racing is all done on a paved track, Global Rallycross challenges cars to perform on multiple kinds of terrain, including dirt, and to complete jumps that can be up to 70 feet long.
The cars are built for the extreme, with 600 horsepower and the ability to accelerate from 0 to 60 in just 1.9 seconds. All vehicles are manufactured by the event sponsors, which include Chevrolet, Ford, Subaru and Volkswagen.
Fans are allowed ample time to get face-to-face with the cars and teams before the race. The prep area is also open, so anyone in attendance can shake hands with the drivers and watch mechanics work on the cars.
Two-day tickets start at $55, but single-day tickets are also available.
