This Relatable 'Christmas In South Florida' Song Describes What It's Like To Spend Our Holiday Season By The Beach

While the rest of the country is bundled up in coats and scarves and recovering from the weekend's snowstorms, we're still readying ourselves for Christmas with plans to hit the beach.

Boca native and singer-songwriter Mike Mineo has captured this comical essence of Christmastime in our wacky South Florida with a new song that's already gone from viral video to radio airwaves.

With lyrics like, "It's Christmas in South Florida / Sand angels and coconuts / May the snow birds and locals / Drive in peace," Mineo whipped up "Christmas In South Florida" in 30 minutes while lying on the beach.

He quickly recorded it as a voice note on his iPhone, listened back to it, and was stoked to realize he'd written a song he wishes he could've listened to while growing up in South Florida.

"There's really no Christmas songs that really kind of capture it, and in light of what everyone else's Christmas sounds like based on all the classic songs, if you fly to South Florida, it's kind of comical," he said. "I just wanted to capture that in a song."

The indie music artist grew up in Boca Raton, where he attended Boca High and Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach. Though he moved from Delray Beach to Nashville earlier this year to pursue his music career, Mineo was in town in early December for several holiday gigs.

In preparation for his shows, Mineo had learned six Christmas songs over a span of a few days, and he wanted to pick a good one for The Heavy Pets Holiday Ball at Crest Theatre in Delray, when he decided to write his own.

He'd caught on to the catchy, lighthearted melodies that make holiday songs successful and figured it wouldn't be too hard to come up with lyrics that capture the South Florida spirit.

"The song literally popped out. I was cracking up while writing it," he said.

Mineo tested it out with friends (one of whom suggested Mineo add some riskier lyrics—which inspired the Miami face-eater line) and then played it at a private holiday party at Table 26 in West Palm once the party wound down and only staff remained.

"They all freaking died laughing," he said.

A friend and fellow local musician Bryan Smith (the shirtless guy in the video) suggested Mineo film a video, and together with Beau Meyer, the trio perfected their harmonies, recorded the video, and shared it online.

The video has amassed more than 30,000 views in the past week, and alternative radio station 104.3 The Shark has played the "Christmas in South Florida" song on the air as well.

Listen to the song below:

Lyrics:

It's Christmas in South Florida
Sand angels and coconuts,
May the snow birds and locals,
Drive in peace,
It's Christmas in South Florida,
Dreaming of low humidity,
So my Christmas balls,
Won't be stickin to my jeans,

I'm sick of songs like white Christmas,
When the only snow you'll see,
Is locked inside some bathroom stall,
In a dance club on South Beach,

Christmas in South Florida
The country's makin fun of us,
For wearin snow coats,
In 60 degrees
It's Christmas in South Florida
The summer's almost over
Till it comes back again
In two more weeks,

How's a kid supposed to believe
In Santa Claus coming
When he doesn't own a pair of shorts
And it's hot as balls on Christmas Eve

It's Christmas in South Florida
But Boca feels like Halloween,
Too many women getting fake lips
In their stockings

(Zwee Dee Diddle Solo)

Is there something worse
Than the naughty list that Santa has for this place
Cause there's a man in Miami
That wants to eat his face

It's Christmas in South Florida,
Though they all make fun of us,
Instead of shovelin snow,
We'll be chillin down on the beach,
Instead of shovelin snow,
We'll be chillin down on the beach
