Small Business Saturday in South Florida
The shopping season is among us and what weekend tempts us to holiday shop the most? Of course it’s the weekend following Thanksgiving where there are crowded stores on Black Friday and lagging websites on Cyber Monday. But in between these important money-saving days is a day dedicated to small, local businesses.
Small Business Saturday is Nov. 29 this year and Fort Lauderdale is gearing up on providing deals to its holiday shoppers. Last year, American Social offered free dessert to exhausted shoppers and Lilac and Lilies Boutique made sure their holiday sale was in full bloom.
Small Business Saturday was started in 2010 by American Express. American Express card members can register to get up to $30 back when they shop “small” on Small Business Saturday with their American Express card.
Daniel’s Antiques, Hoffman’s Chocolate and Zola Keller are on the list of participating locations this year.
Merchants don’t have to pay to participate. Those who want to sign up their business or shoppers looking for participating locations and to register their American Express card can do so by going to www.shopsmall.com.
The day boosts awareness for these shops in their surrounding neighborhoods. Small businesses in South Florida have become confident that their companies will grow and hire new employees in 2015. Of 300 business owners polled last month in Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties, 68 percent predicted their revenue will increase in the next year, according to the Sun Sentinel.
Last year, shoppers spent $5.7 billion at locally-owned shops and restaurants on Small Business Saturday, an increase of 3.6 percent from the previous year, according to a national survey by American Express and the National Federation of Independent Business.
