The team behind YOLO, Tarpon Bend and Boatyard restaurants are back with a new concept, and this time the focus is Southeastern African spiced chicken.
Spatch Grilled Peri-Peri Chicken, a fast-casual eatery opening in a Coral Ridge shopping center, is a partnership between The Restaurant People and South African restaurateur Stavros Florias. The new Fort Lauderdale restaurant is set to debut Thursday, Feb. 9.
The restaurant will serve whole grilled chicken platters, wings, sandwiches, bowls, and salads—all tossed in Spatch's signature Peri-Peri sauce, ranging in temperature from mild ("soul-warming") to hot ("holy smokes!"). Lemon and herb sauce, sticky mango with hints of coconut and lime, and plain (no sauce, but still prepared in a 24-hour marinade) are also options.
For those unfamiliar, Peri-Peri is a hot sauce made from African Bird's Eye chili peppers, which offer a rich and fruity flavor with a kick. The peppers are the secret ingredient in The Restaurant People's plans to accomplish its tongue-in-cheek slogan: "Making chicken great again." (The group is so confident in the plan, in fact, they're already looking to add two additional Broward locations, according to TRP President Tim Petrillo.)
TRP co-founder and executive chef Peter Boulukos expects items like the chicken bowls—sitting atop beddings of coconut quinoa; a three-grain blend of farro, barley and bulgar wheat; or mac and cheese—and the half bird to be big hits.
"It will be some of the most flavorful and moist grilled chicken out there," he said.
The health-conscious eatery, which says it uses only all-natural chicken free of hormones and steroids, will also feature several vegan/vegetarian-friendly options, including kale and quinoa salads and other savory sides. Plus, guests can try Organic South African Rooibos tea, a caffeine-free blend that promotes calm and relaxation.
Despite being a quick-service restaurant (customers order at the counter before their food is brought to their tables), Spatch offers an upscale-casual feel with both indoor and outdoor seating.
To celebrate the opening, the restaurant will be giving away free meals to the first 100 customers that walk in the door each morning from Thursday to Saturday.
Spatch will be open 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The restaurant will also offer delivery service via Delivery Dudes for those who want Grilled Peri-Peri Chicken delivered to their doors.
