Trader Joe's In Davie Opens Friday, And There's A Hawaiian-Style Celebration And Tons Of Seasonal Pumpkin Items In Store
When Trader Joe's opens its doors in Davie on Friday, the cult-favorite grocery chain will introduce to South Florida a store that has melded its iconic nautical Hawaiian theme with Davie's country western vibe. That means you can expect to find a mural of cows lassoing a jug of milk and a wanted poster for the most desirable wine in the world.
Located at 2296 S. University Drive in the Tower Shops Plaza, the Davie store opens at 8 a.m. and will be celebrating its grand opening all day with live music by a one-man steel drum band, food demonstrations and more.
In preparation for the large expected turnout, the store is working with the Davie Police Department to help with traffic flow during opening weekend, according to Trader Joe's Davie Captain Paul Brumwell (i.e. the store manager).
Grand opening day will begin with a ceremonial Hawaiian lei-cutting, and guests will be bestowed with leis of their own. The store will also be decorated with festive balloons, and food samples will be available at the store's daily demonstration counter (called Joe's Eatery), satellite stations, and the wine demo area.
Throughout the 9,300-square-foot store, colorful murals conceptualized and hand-painted by the entire Trader Joe's crew highlight neighborhood attractions. The artistic collaborations include Davie's Flamingo Gardens, Tree Tops Park, Bergeron Rodeo Grounds and the Miami Dolphins Training Facility along with mascots of university football teams.
The gardens' pink flamingos are Brumwell's favorite.
"It really pops right there when you walk in the store," he said.
Every Friday through Sunday, Trader Joe's in Davie will offer wine demos from noon to 7 p.m. The store will also hold weekly raffles for shoppers who bring their own reusable grocery bags. During each visit, customers can place their free raffle entry into a treasure chest for a chance to receive a $25 gift bag filled with Trader Joe's products. Every Monday, a winner—not required to be present—will be selected.
As with all Trader Joe's stores, shoppers can sample any product for free (as long as it's a ready-to-eat item). All they have to do is ask a crew member to open it up for them.
"We don't want customers to be scared to try anything new," said Brumwell, who comes to the Davie store from Gainesville with almost nine years of experience.
New products are the norm at Trader Joe's, which introduces up to two dozen new items every month, such as the recently released Sriracha roasted garlic BBQ sauce.
Perhaps the most notable new release? A seasonal version of everyone's favorite: pumpkin pie spice cookie butter.
In fact, the Davie location's opening couldn't be more perfectly timed, because 'tis the season at Trader Joe's—pumpkin season, that is. Brumwell estimates that about 60 varieties of pumpkin food and drink items will be on sale.
This includes pumpkin ale six-packs for $6.99, classics like pumpkin bread and muffin mix, pumpkin butter, frozen pumpkin cheesecake, and pumpkin spice coffee grounds.
"You wouldn't even think you could use pumpkin 60 ways," he said.
The store will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Davie residents can expect to receive copies of the Fearless Flyer newsletter in their mailboxes after the store opens.
