Waffle Wednesdays At Mad Studios Let Broward Professionals Network Over Tasty Breakfast
Network over waffles with us, Broward County.
Every week at Mad Studios in downtown Fort Lauderdale, local professionals gather for the free weekly Waffle Wednesday series, a Wynwood-based concept from Miami tech startup LiveNinja that has made its way to Broward.
Starting at 9 a.m., guests can mix and mingle over breakfast, enjoying the week's wacky waffle creations and homemade cafecito, followed by a 20-minute presentation from a local startup, tech company, or other industry leader. Previous presentations have included insights from successful CEOs, updates on the local startup scene, advice on how to get funded and more. The casual networking event is usually wrapped up by 10:15 a.m.
On Oct. 12, Gold Coast magazine's editorial team will be guest celebrity chefs, whipping up a special Jalapeño (All-up-in-yo) Business waffles made with cornbread and a secret jalapeño cheese sauce. The week's guest speaker will be an individual from the art community.
Some recent favorite recipes have included a lemon ricotta waffle with raspberry preserves; the Cereal Killer waffle with cream cheese frosting and toppings of Fruity Pebbles, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, or Lucky Charms; and the buttermilk S'more Waffle with chocolate, marshmallow and graham cracker.
"We got to use the blow torch to melt the marshmallow on [that] one. Anything with open flame is twice the fun," Melissa Sweredoski, of Mad Studios, said.
The Mad Studios team used to make the trek to Wynwood for Waffle Wednesday each week when they realized there was a gap in the Broward community that this event series could fill, according to Sweredoski.
"We became close with the LiveNinja team and asked them if we could bring the concept to Broward County," she said. "They graciously let us expand their event (and trust us with their top secret waffle recipes)."
Alfonso Martinez, LiveNinja co-founder and chief design officer, agreed that the Mad Studios group "gets it."
“We had dreamed about expanding to other venues for a while, but the timing didn’t feel right, and we hadn’t found the right group to entrust with the mission,” Martinez said in a statement.
For Mad Studios, a creative agency that's been around for 15 years, these collaborative events have let the typically under-the-radar group have a greater presence in the community, Sweredoski suggested.
"Plus, it's great to be able to take a little break in the middle of the week to eat some waffles and learn about all the innovative things happening in Fort Lauderdale," she said.
Upcoming speakers include Peter Prior from Skurt, a car rental app, on Oct. 26, and Nathan Heber from Boatyard, a boat/yacht rental app, on Nov. 2.
The event is free and open to the public. To attend a future Waffle Wednesday session, RSVP here. We'll see you there!
