The Yoga Joint Opened Its First Studio Beyond Fort Lauderdale. Next, They Plan To Take The Concept Nationwide.
With two successful studios in Fort Lauderdale, The Yoga Joint brings its trademark Hot Fusion Flow Yoga sequence to a new location in Boca Raton. And that's just the start. Next, owners Paige Held and Kelly Green plan to expand their yoga concept nationwide.
They say not to be business partners with your best friend. But for Paige Held and Kelly Green, it works.
The duo had been practicing yoga together for about five years when Held opened The Yoga Joint North in 2010 on Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale. Green would often teach classes there, and by 2013, Held got Green on board to open the Yoga Joint South on SE 17th Street.
Now, they've expanded the brand, known for its original yoga sequence, great music, daycare services and a sense of community, to Boca Raton.
Green practiced yoga up until the day she delivered her baby on Aug. 22.
“I never once had swollen feet or ankles,” she says.
Twelve days later, she was back on the mat.
For Green and Held, yoga is more than a business, it's a lifestyle.
Held started when she was 16, earning her teaching certification at 20. Since, she's made an appearance on the cover of the Yoga Journal and opened three studios.
Green, who was born with a birth defect in both knees, started practicing yoga while she was recovering from a surgery at age 23. She remembers a time when she couldn't sit down and stand back up. But, she would go on to study under master yoga teacher Jimmy Barkan, and travel the world teaching. “I felt like this was my calling,” Green says. “This was what I had to do.”
The Yoga Joint Brand
Green and Held trademarked their own yoga sequence they call Hot Fusion Flow Yoga, which incorporates their favorite yoga practices in a strategic order. They've also introduced a 200-hour teacher-training course, so that each of their instructors is versed in everything from the company's yoga methods, to the body's anatomy, to knowing how to decide the temperature in the studio, which can be anywhere from 95 to 100 degrees, depending on outside humidity.
The underlying theme at The Yoga Joint facilities is community. “It's just a huge, extended family,” Green says. Since both owners are mothers, one of the most important features the studios offer is daycare services, and kid's yoga classes on the weekends. The studios also host boutiques with clothing brands like Bitsy Bottom, K-Deer and Teeki; and jewelry pieces, books, candles and organic skincare products.
What to expect
Whether your first 75-minute hot yoga class is at the new Boca Raton studio on State Road 7, or at the North or South locations in Fort Lauderdale, Held says to wear something you can sweat in, and bring water, a yoga mat and towel. But she also says everything you need is available at the boutique—“So there's no excuse,” she says.
In addition to a great workout, Green says to “expect to be challenged physically, mentally and emotionally, but also expect to leave feeling empowered.”
